Lisbon is a wonderful, small, old city, with fading glory from prior
wealthy periods and overseas conquests. The Portuguese were the first
european overseas explorers and conquerors. There are fantastic monuments to see from the water and from shore.
Lisbon is now Portugal's capital, main port and largest city. It's compact and lively, and a popular tourist destination. It was mobbed.
Lisbon is several miles up the Rio.Tejo. But out at the mouth is the fashionable yachting and beach town of Cascais (pronounced Cash KI Eesh). There's a spendy marina, but the weather was calm enough we could stay in the anchorage, which is open to the south, for a few days.

It's a busy and fun holiday town, set among cliffs with great, cheap, train access to everywhere else. It was awesome.

Nearby is the fantastic historic castle town of Sintra. There is a very old 12th century Moorish fort on a hilltop to clamber over. Both castles have fantastic views over the landscape and far out to sea.

And a flamboyant 19th century castle inspired Neuschwanstein, in Germany, I think by the same architect. We took a convenient bus up there. Of course the whole place was swarming with tourists.

On our route south, in mid-September, we stopped at several charming small towns. Some were up big river estuaries, others were just perched on the coast with breakwaters and jetties and tiny marinas. We had mainly sunny weather with light winds. Our stops were Aveiro, Figueira da Foz, and Peniche. We cut a wide arc around Nazaire. There's a deep underwater canyon that causes ginormous waves famous among surfers.

Aveiro is set in a large estuary and has canals snaking through the old town. We arrived at the harbor entrance just as a big fishing boat festival parade was barrelling down on us, loaded with merrymakers, flags flying, horns honking. A marine policeman on a jet ski helped us through. Then we motored through a sailboat race. There was lots of current, so tying up our 42ft boat in a 44ft spot on a long dock was a challenge. But we made it with help from the friendly folks already there.

From the beautiful coastal village of Muros, Galicia, NW Spain, we took a short bus trip to Santiago de Compostela. But first, I stopped at an ATM. Bad move - late on a Friday afternoon, after the bank closed for the weekend, the ATM ate my debit card. And we needed to leave Sunday and kiss the card goodbye.
Hence a new travel and cruising rule: Only use bank ATMs while banks are open, to have some chance of recovery. We get by OK with spares, but the "no drama" philosophy corollary requires "prevent easily preventable problems"
Anyhow Santiago was fantastic. Crammed with camino walkers and devoted pilgrims (sometimes on knees), and raucous regional festivities, it was a real contrast to the calm and quiet normal cruising life (up until then). Of course, at first there is the beautiful old architecture...
In mid-September, we crossed the border from beautiful Galicia, Spain, into Portugal, still in the company of the small OCC (Ocean Cruising Club) East Atlantic Rally (6 boats).. The coast flattens out and the scenery is less dramatic. However, we visit a number of pleasant coastal towns en route to Porto and Lisbon.

Most are shallow estuaries requiring entry in calm conditions. Prices are even lower than Spain.
Our first 2 stops were Viana do Costelo and Povoa de Varzim, very similar towns and ports.

From Povoa de Varzim, we took a short bus ride to Porto. It's a fantastic town to visit, but very crowded and seems smothered by visitors.
We were sorry to leave France, but it was time to move on. The 336 nm route runs SW across the Golfe de Gascogne (aka Bay of Biscay in English).
This body of water is known for very rough seas due to it's shape and
location, the shallow shelf that extends outwards, so that big ocean
swells really pile up when they run into it. And there are various
coastal currents that change with the tide, So there were a few unknowns
to be prepared for. Therefore, we chose our crossing time with great
care. Winds were light and seas were calm, so it was a moderate and
easy two day passage.
August 21st - Continuing our route south, the rocky islands and inlets gave way to lower and sandier shore and islands, with few good sheltered anchorages.

After a couple days, we arrived at La Rochelle, the end point of our French cruise. It is a major sailing center and a busy tourist destination. We splurged on the marina for a week+ and used our bikes to run over to the picturesque and busy old town. At the marina, there was a well stocked mini market, a superb boulangerie/patisserie and lots of good restaurants. Oh yeah.... it was great. The weather was hot during the first few days, but very comfortable at night.
Here is a fleet of 30+ 1-design boats for big group outings, team building and the like. As you can see, there wasn't much wind that particular weekend.
We rejoined our kiwi friends, Ross and Ann who we met at Roscanval near

They're a favorite local boating destination and were chock full of boats of all kinds over a holiday weekend. They are very low lying, so it's hard to get good photos. Despite how crowded it was, we found a peaceful spot to anchor. One difference we noticed from US and Canadian cruising, is there are many fewer dinghies buzzing around, which is much more pleasant. And of course, many fewer big powerboats sending big wakes into the anchorages. Add French food and wine: life is good there.
Again, it's hard to get good photos of these low lying rocks, but the sunset shows up well. Followed by fireworks late that night, which turned out to be a common occurrence.
Our first stop after the Rade de Brest, was Morgat. It was several miles around the Crozon Peninsula to get there, but we ended up an easy bike ride from our prior stop at Roscanval.
Morgat sits on a pretty and protected bay. A longtime fishing village, it was taken over and developed in 1883 by Armand Peugeot, as a summer holiday resort for his employees. So there are many beautiful late 19th century homes in the town.
By now, it's ancient history and some of the photos were already on Facebook, but it was such a wonderful cruise, why not relive it.

After a lovely 10 day visit to Cornwall, we crossed the English Channel from Plymouth to Brest in NW France. (Well, really it's in Bretagne, or Brittany to English speakers.

It was an easy, overnight crossing, due to calm weather. However, it
is a very busy shipping channel, And great care and attention is
required. Here's a screen shot of ship traffic on our plotter: The
lines are ships' tracks in one direction. There's whole other set
going the other way. The small arrows are predicted wind direction and
speed. Once we crossed this mass of ships, we had to do it again for the
inbound traffic lane.

Anyhow, we arrived safely in Brest Sunday morning. Marina du Château staff were very thoughtful and add the US flag to the array when we checked in. It was a very nice gesture. As you can see, there are many countries represented. There is an old fort and museum remaining that overlook the harbor.

We spent several days at Marina du Château. Checking into Customs and Immigration was perfunctory.

Our friends, Catherine et Pierre, who we met in the Bahamas live nearby and gave us a warm welcome. Pierre took us to the chandleries and supermarket. One main problem to resolve was cooking gas. Portable gas tanks are not refillable in France, and the standard fittings are different than our American ones. So Pierre got us set up with Camping Gaz bottles, hoses and regulator.

After some catastrophic modern shipwrecks that cause huge oil spills,
the French posted some gigantic remorques, giant tugboats to rescue
ships in distress. They can tow container ships. The Abeille Bourbon was so big, it was hard to get it all in one photo. It was open for public tours, and was really impressive. Anytime there is a gale, the ship puts to sea to be ready for an accident. I guess the crew must have cast iron stomachs.
The harbor, the Rade de Brest, is a wonderful, enclosed, deep body of water surrounded by small villages. Perfect for cruising and a submarine base. We were underway when a sub was being towed out, and the Gendarmes came around and very politely asked us where we are going and please to clear the way. We could overhear them on the radio to other boats, and they were as polite with all boats.

During WWII, Germany had a navy base and a submarine base in the city. The surface ships were moored in the river and this section of town was obliterated by allied bombing. The locals joke that they bombed everything but the submarine pens. The bridge in the photo below replaces the famous Pont National that way destroyed during the war.
Here is large piece of art from the town. If you look closely, you can see plants growing out of the metal tree.
Falmouth, at the mouth of the River Fal, was a beautiful sight, lush and green, full of sailboats, ancient gun forts (King Harry XIII), friendly people and mild weather. We loved it.
There was lots of food, fuel and water left over. We actually did some handsteering for something to do.

The little marina in Praia da Vittoria was less crowded and easier to get around than at Horta where we were the 4th boat rafted off the wall. It had nice facilities and even bathtubs in the shower rooms! Terceira is small than Horta, but is more densely populated. Praia is also a much smaller town.
Flores June 20-22nd
The Azores Islands are composed of nine volcanic islands in the North Atlantic Ocean about 850 mi west of continental Portugal, and are part of Portugal. They enjoy a mild, subtropical marine climate and seem especially suited to raising livestock and other agriculture. And they are about the cleanest, most orderly place we've ever seen. People were very friendly and easygoing. The language is Portuguese, although some speak English. We learned a few words of Portuguese and got along fine.

The islands have been populated by Spanish or Portuguese for 600 years, and like Bermuda, there were no indigenous peoples present when the Europeans arrived. So there's a single modern culture, unlike the islands in the Pacific and the west coast of north America. The food and wine are wonderful and moderately priced. So provisioning and eating out were good.

Flores is a rugged, lush island that seems like a remote outpost in the Atlantic. It's a steep volcanic island, covered with thick forests, vegetation and flowers, hence the name. They are especially blessed with hydrangeas. Sometimes, while walking on a country road , the only sound would be birdsong.

[Unfortunately, I didn't get any good photos of the vegetation on Flores. But there will be some from the other islands in later posts.]

There are several small towns on the island and a modern airport.

We arrived a couple days before Alan's flight out. The day before Alan's flight, there was a short weather window to sail 150 miles to the island of Faial. So we left him at the bus stop and he stayed in a hotel by the airport on his last night. Alan was such a help and good company on the two legs from Florida to Bermuda to Flores. We were sorry to see him go.
Late in the afternoon, on June 9th, we made the rounds of the St George anchorage to say goodbye to some of the other boats and we set off eastbound. We arranged with some of the boats to participate in an informal cruisers HF net at 1800 UTC everyday, but we had trouble finding them on the air. Bill and Alan slapped on the scop patches and took some dramamine, Kathi served dinner.

Bermuda blocks the SE swells, so at first, seas were pretty flat. Then they start coming together after wrapping around the island making things a little bumpy. But that gradually dissipated. And because it was so late in the day, we had a quick dinner and the 2 off watch crew went below to sleep.

Our usual watch system for all 3 legs, was 3 hours watches. We were all up for dinner and radio weather from 5pm to 7:30pm or so. Each evening around 5pm, 3-5 dolphins would often make a few passes.

Kathi usually started preparing dinner around 5:30 and tried to have everything cleaned up and put away for the night by dark (which varied as we went east in a time zone, and north in latitude). That helped reduce clanking dishes and pans. Then I set up whatever snacks or drinks people would want when coming on watch during the night, to minimize effort and noise. The motion of the boat and the noise of wind and waves, makes sleep a little difficult. And the crew sleeps in the main cabin, ie, near the galley. So we try to minimize unnecessary additional noise.

Watches:

Bill 9pm-midnight, he would often reef before the next watch there seemed any chance it would be needed overnight,

Alan or Karl - midnight-3am (Thank you both!!!!)

Kathi - 3am-6am

Bill - 6am-9am

9am everybody up for coffee and brekkie

We were all usually up until after lunch and tried to get good naps in the afternoon.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Fortunately, we had little rain, and winds were fairly steady in direction and speed, so no drama.
It was good sailing, not too bumpy. Still, it's challenging to function onboard because the boat moves in all directions and not as predictably as you would hope.

As we neared Flores (pronounced "Floresh"), we had fog and clouds, so the rugged island was barely visible as we approached the morning of June 20th.
The tiny walled marina was full, so we had to anchor in the small bay
outside with several other boats. That night the wind really piped up
and a couple boats had to reset anchors. Several boats left the marina the next morning, so we were able to get
inside and tie to a dock for around $20/night. Ahhhh, peace at last. Bermuda is a lovely, civilized and very expensive subtropical outpost in the ocean.
Our first stop was St George, an enclosed bay, with about 20 other cruising boats at anchor from all over. There was a Dutch boat we last saw in the Marquesas in 2010.
Bermuda's main population center is Hamilton, the capital farther along the string of islands So after a couple days recuperation from our passage, we took the bus to Hamilton to see what was there. While we were gone, Giffords' Totem arrived from St Martin and we had a quick visit. We hadn't seen them since New Years Day in Sydney, 2012!
After a very pleasant time in Bermuda, our wallets were running dry and the weather window opened up, so it was time to put on our scop patches and go to sea again.

Next stop: Flores Island, Azores approx 1800 n mi NE.
On May 21st, after 6 weeks of hard work preparing the boat in Florida, we exited Port Everglades out into the Gulf Stream. Alan Johnson from Seattle was on board to help us get the boat to Bernuda and the Azores. We were really glad he had the time to come with us. Fortunately, the passage started out with moderate winds and low seas. It had been a long time since we'd done an ocean passage, so it was a big adjustment to get our sea legs again. As usual, Kathi had prepared some hot meals in advance, but the weather was so warm, she didn't want to turn on the stove. So we ate a lot of salads and sandwiches at first.
To start out, we all used scopolomine for seasickness, but both Bill
and Alan continued to struggle with it. Once Alan added Dramamine to
the mix, he could function better. It's most difficult being down below
in the cabin, so he spent all his waking hours out in the cockpit and
stood very long watches. Thanks Alan, it was a great help.
And, we caught a big wahoo, with lots of big white teeth. Unfortunately, the battery in my camera was dead, so no photos..

This turned out to be the hardest of the 3 passages across the Atlantic. For a couple days, we sailed upwind (ugh!), somewhat unnecessarily, and seas were rough and confused.

But, eventually it was over. St George Harbour, Bermuda, was a welcome and peaceful anchorage. Whew! We were glad to put that all behind us. And, we were looking forward to a rendezvous with friends.
And a quiet place to prepare our tax return and compile the many documents needed to apply for a French long stay visa.
Then we moved down Rock Sound. At this point we started getting acquainted with other cruisers going the same way.

A few days later, we left Eleuthera Point

for Little San Salvador where Holland America Lines has a Potemkin Village. It was rolly, so we tried a side bridle to the anchor chain to set the stern into the waves, with moderate success.

It was a wild ride over to Cat Island, finally we were exposed to ocean swells and wind.
On Valentine's Day, we tucked in wee Fernandez Bay in front of a small resort. We had a nice but very expensive dinner ashore. The real fun was meeting the other guests from France and Switzerland. We had a great time.

Fernandez Bay is open to the south and west, so coming wind changes pushed us onwards to the Exumas. Cay was lovely, but the weather changes every few days, and the
protection at Soldier Cay was limited. So we set out for New Providence
Island, just east of Nassau. For a change, this took us out over deep
waters.

Nassau has a good port, but is a busy city that
doesn't interest us. So we found an anchorage just east. As we
approached, the wind strengthened a lot, but we nipped in the pass in
time to find our way through the shallows to a safe spot for the night.

The
next day, we set sail again eastward to the big island of Eleuthera and
well protected Hatchet Bay. It's unusual for the Bahamas, as it's
almost completely surrounded by high limestone banks with a narrow
opening. All day we sailed over 10-20 ft depths, which is mind boggling
to us, since the boat needs 7ft of water. After a really windy start, the wind died completely to a glassy calm. The water is so clear it was like motoring across a giant swimming pool. We could see starfish on the bottom as we passed.
